This portrait of a rock dove, one of the most common types of pigeon.
The picture pokes fun at the hilariously terrible nests they make. As this species is descended from cliff dwelling rock doves, which often utilize very little material as their habitat naturally includes nooks which they can safely rest and brood within, they have run into an humorous evolutionary mismatch in attempting to live in modern cities.
Pigeons, in contrast to the bowerbird or weaver birds which make impressive nests, merely lay their eggs on the ground admit a few scattered sticks, twigs, and various articles of plastic debris. It is a baffling sight and a good excuse to explore the texture of their features and down.
For a project I was assinged to create 25 pictures of a singular subject covering a variety of styles to explore the many aspects of an object.I had selected a landmark known as "Devil's Tower" or "Bear's Lodge" by the Indigenous American Indians.
I selected this landmark for its beauty, strong iconic shape, and as a reference to Steven Spielberg's 1977 film "Close Encounter of the Third Kind" in which an aliens attempt to arrange a meeting with mankind by psychically implanting the image of the butte in the subconsciousness of artist, compelling them create represenative artwork of the feature.
I, as one such artist, would be compelled to make art of Devil's Tower.
Here are my favorite six of the collection of 25.
Here are a collection of assorted portrait's I have made.
